GDT recently posted on another board that they are going to make the Hobbit into 2 movies-basically the Hobbit part 1 and 2. They are going to spread the material in the book over 2 films.

Thoughts?

to be fair, there's still some wriggle room in what he said (compared to how the commentator has understood it.) But personally that looks like good news to me... I'm wondering if the 'ancillary stuff' he's talking about includes gandalfs missing times & maybe expanding characters like elrond/the wood elves to link the story in with the larger world a bit more...

Yeah I think the commentator is over-interpreting what GDT said. Not that the two films will only contain The Hobbit book and nothing else, but that some of the book will bleed over into the 2nd film, so that all five Tolkien movies are a continuous narrative.

Yeah it was expected anyway, but really pleased that it's confirmed now!

After all, I think they made a wise decision.
I think they didn't have enough material for making a second movie just about the things in between the Hobbit and LotR
Now they won't have to cut out lots of things in the hobbit and they will have two good movies

at least... I hope so

I think this approach will definitely limit the amount of material they can use from the appendix now. Without the "bridge" film and it now looking like it will be The hobbit part 1 and 2 I could still see some white council, dol gulur scenes in their and still keep it true to the books story but not any of the other stuff like:

Arwen and Aragorns first meeting
young aragorn
hunt for Gollum
Balin recolonizing Moria
Aragorn and Gandalf meet
Aragorn protecting shire and exploits in Gondor and Rohan

If any of this other stuff gets included, I think The Hobbit movie will be too "diluted" to really be the Hobbit story.

They can still use material from the appendices in the first movie part. It's not like they aren't going to do it.

Me, I liked their first idea of having all of The Hobbit in the first film and all of the appendices stuff in the 2nd "bridge" film. I think Unicorn is right, some of the things I was hoping to see in film 2 will be pared down or dropped altogether. From the interview, GDT seems to have rejected the "bridge" idea.

Maybe he is looking ahead to making a new set of Middle-earth movies in 2022 Very Happy

I very highly doubt they are going to leave out Aragorn and Arwen, especially when Viggo clearly stated he would return for the movie. Del Toro saw the last movies and is not dumb enough to realize how important the love of Arwen and Aragorn is in Peter Jackson's vision. That is clearly all we need to know. The Dul Guldur scene and the White Concil scene is unnecessary and if it does happen so be it! It's just an add in but it still would be cool to see! Another thing to look at is frodo and his return. Elijah also stated he would like to return for the movies. I think they might add him in. It is as far as the story goes guys. If they believe it exists, they will do it and it WILL look good. It's hollywood with Del Toro, Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Phillipa Boyens, they created a franchise that sparked billions of dollars and 17 academy awards in 2001, 2002, and 2003. This project will not be so screwed up as some may think. All the movie needs is a cast. If Del Toro wants a seamless transition, he will definitely know what to add especially with help from the king of these movies, Peter Jackson.

I´m glad to hear that GDT plans to limit the story of the films mainly to the Hobbit´s story. Bringing the White Council and Gandalf in Dol Guldur into the films is quite good I think but A&A and Frodo should not appear. It is a simple fact that Frodo was not born when Bilbo was on his journey and Aragorn was only ten years old.
