Variety reports:
| Quote: | U also was caught off-guard after they aggressively courted Guillermo Del Toro, the filmmaker behind "Pan's Labyrinth" and "Hellboy." The studio gave him a first-look deal, picked up a sequel to "Hellboy" with a budget of more than $80 million, and even bought the rights to his dream project, the H.P. Lovecraft epic, "At the Mountains of Madness."
But U brass was stunned to suddenly see Del Toro emerge as the likely director of the next two "Hobbit" movies for New Line and MGM. That would lock him down for four straight years in New Zealand.
Langley acknowledges, "We're in discussions with how to rectify that with Guillermo." |

If he doesn't want to direct, forget him. He didn't read LotR in the first place.

The problem isn't if he wants to direct or not, but if he is allowed to do so. _________________ Sic hobbitur ad astra |

Am I misreading this? If del Toro is open to a bribe, then he doesn't really want to direct The Hobbit.
ETA - nevermind, I just read the Variety artilce. "Bribe" was not a good word to describe what was happening.

Bribing isn't mentioned in the original article, that's just an interpretation. It could prove right, but not necessarily. _________________ Sic hobbitur ad astra |

Yeah, I got it now.
Apologies to Senor del Toro, it was the Gollum-half of me that made me say that |

That's just the wording I used.
I'm still okay with another person directing. At the moment I am indifferent about the whole picking a director thing. He'd do a good job, but he's no the only person who would. _________________ My Facebook

I agree, Forget Him, if he didn't have the interest in the story to begin with he won't have the emotional commitment to the story and will always be directing the story from a distance.

| Yes! These are actually great news. Let the Hobbit be a movie made by fan for fans. |

| Sounds like Del Toro had a foot in each camp - let's see, where could he make the most money! I'm disgusted with him. Let's hope someone else better is chosen. |

Don't you think you are a bit overhasty with him? It's Universal who wants him for something else. Let's just wait how things evolve. _________________ Sic hobbitur ad astra |

| Me too, but I think it's useless to wish that. Hopefully, this thing will get resolved with Universal and we'll then have to wait to see about the Tolkien estate lawsuit. God, what a mess! |

This is a great conversation that would be much better in my opinion if the F-Bomb remained absent from the two posters who used it. I usually let Smaug do his thing with this sort of stuff, and if he wants to overrule me then I will certainly acquiesce to his request.
But this is a public forum with no age minimum (meaning a 14 year old could read it and see a word he or she hears/says every day, or a 4 year old could see it and learn how to get the runs in more places than just his diaper). And really, I think that we are all intelligent enough to use words other than profanities to describe any emotions about what is essentially total and utter hearsay at this point.
