I think that Del Toro put it perfectly. Smaug needs to demand a strong part in this movie. I think movies with dragons in them, in recent years have lacked this quality - From Dragonheart to Eragon - Dragons just don’t seem "all they could be". I think Del Toro recognizes this and plans to fix it...
He seems to really want to make an impression on the viewers that says something and I for one can’t wait to see how it all comes out in the end.. |

I like how he talks about when he "reveals" Smaug. I wonder if he is talking about revealing him in the movie, or just to the public. I personally think that showing only his face or eyes and only hearing his voice for the conversations from him and Bilbo would be neat, and not showing him hardly at all until he takes off and flies towards Laketown.
Also, has anyone else seen Dragonslayer? It's not a bad movie. I'd recommend it if you're in to dragon stuff. The clips in the fake Hobbit trailer that surfaced a few years back came from this movie. Ironic, huh. _________________ My Facebook

| The key to Smaug lies in the hands and pencils of Hove and Lee. If Toro is smart enough to let their vision of Smaug come to life, all is going to be just fine... |

I wonder if we'll get a glimpse of Smaug before the release, in a trailer or something. On the one hand he would be a big selling point for the movie; but maybe GDT would want to save him for a surprise, like Gollum was in TTT.
I do remember "Dragonslayer" btw, that was a great movie for its time. |

Probably not-they will most definitely keep him secret.
Also, it will be important to portray him very differently than the fell beasts from LOTR. _________________ The road goes ever on and on... |

This is fantastic news, but difficult to know what to say for the risk of repeating things i said in another thread many moons ago.
I think the best thing here is the effort Del Toro is looking to put into the character. Dragons in movies, even talking dragons, are at risk of becoming one-dimensional monsters rather than characters... and i believe that's the difference he aims to make with his Smaug.
Movie dragons have had voices before, and they roar, belch fire and stomp around with all the brute mass of a dinosaur (generally speaking). Tolkien of course saw things a little differently, so i believe our Smaug is going to be a thinner creature altogether once he hits the big screen; the emphasis being his wicked character rather than his body.
Remembering Pan's Labyrinth, one of the most amazing things was the way the Faun looked so realistic. Living in a naturalistic setting, the character was also natural and wooden looking... and despite being good-natured, he creaked and moved in a most unusual, mysterious manner. I believe that is an example of the "environment" Del Toro speaks of with regard to Smaug, and so i am confident he'll give us a disturbingly tangible dragon much like he brought this Faun to life.
That goes for his directing ability. Assuming he get's Howe and Lee on board to help out with the design, then i am even more confident that he'll succeed in giving us the dragon. |

I'm sure John Howe and Alan Lee will design a great dragon for the Hobbit _________________ I would have followed you, my brother. My captain. My King. |

I belive Del Toro will not make that classic mistake to make one-dimensional monsters he has experience.... and I'm sure
that together with Howe and Lee they'll be the perfect team for
the perfect dragon. I think it worth to visit this site body+fat and that one playoff+team

I hope it lives up to the hype, becuase this does sound very interesting. I can't wait to see what Del Toro does with Smaug. It sounds like it will be great. _________________ God Bless |
