That's quite a shock! I wonder what the real deal is there, why he cut and ran. Perhaps, with all the delays now, if and when the time comes to actually film The Hobbit, Peter Jackson won't step up to the plate. It would seem logical to have him do it, if his other projects are done. Talk about drama...!

This sucks. MGM has shot themselves in the foot now, by losing one of the greatest directors in film currently.

Now Sir Peter is saying that he will direct if no one else can be found to step in to the director's shoes. He will not let the project drop because of this set-back. This info is on the OneRing.net site. What does everyone think of this?

My first thought Is It would be great If Peter Jackson steped In to do It.
A thing to consider Is after all the work done by him and his team and
Del Toro On the script getting a new director means they might want
further changes to script to suit them Inless of course Peter takes over as
Director. But again all this Is moot untill someone buys MGM or Warner
Brothers buy MGM's half of the Hobbit rights.

My opinion is that someone in charge realized that the genius behind LOTR is really Peter Jackson and that he should have full control of what goes on with the movies.

Maybe the April release of BluRay LOTR not selling as well as the studios thought served to have the big honchos take a good look at the whole picture and realize that if the fans aren't happy, the studios make no money.

And, having a new look and feel to the new The Hobbit movies may or may not tick the fans off.

I think Peter should direct, and it will all be alright. Well, if the studios finally give it a go.

Yes, Peter Jackson directing is the best option. I have thought that all along (who hasn't?) Not that everyone does. Let's see this movie made, and made masterfully like The Lord of the Rings.

This is an interesting theory. However, Del Toro is a brilliant director and I believe and respect his decision. Look, it's no secret that the production of The Hobbit was moving at a snail's pace. A director like Del Toro has no time to wait around for these tycoons and lawyers to pull the checks out of there buts. He is a passionate director who cares about what he is doing and not only about the pay check in the end. In the end I just hope Peter Jackson can step up and Direct because right now I think he is the only one who could to it.

This is not good news. Since money is such an issue here I would NOT be surprised whatsoever if this whole project gets scaled down to ONE movie. 3 hrs maybe but only one. I hope not but it would not surprise me. You heard it here first.... Sad

I agree, they don't really NEED to include the whole White Council stuff. I think Niggle will agree with me here.

^ They don't need anything Smile
As long as these movies is being made, I'm happy... and to justify the book it has to be two movies Sad
Imagine the scaled down story if it's only one movie, even though it's three hours

When I first heard about the film being made, I was extremely happy Smile
And when I re-read the book I felt it could be somewhat scaled down, but then they announced it to be two movies Very Happy
But if they now make it to onw movie they have to rewrite the script once again... -.-

Please leave the script mostly as it is now, and just find someone who can direct the movie with good passion for the book (hopefully Peter Jackson) Smile
